How to prepare for a snow ski trip

A skiing holiday is one of the most fun-filled, action-packed, and breathtakingly-beautiful getaways you can enjoy. There is nothing like the brisk, cool mountain air, or the rush you get from hitting fresh powder. However, it is important that you know how to properly prepare for a snow ski trip, especially if you are new to the pursuit.

Not all the things that you need to do to prepare for a snow ski trip involve getting the right gear, and finding the right places to go. Skiing is great exercise, but it should also be noted that it is a physically strenuous activity as well, meaning for many people, it will require a little physical preparation.

Be fit for the slopes

Skiing can be tough on the body, so those who have minimal levels of fitness are often not adequately prepared for the stress and strain that skiing involves. The muscles that are used when skiing are not ones that are typically used in the day-to-day of our sedentary lifestyles. It is recommended that you give yourself more than enough time (a couple of months) advanced preparation, this will ensure you’re in the right physical shape to hit the slopes with confidence.

Balance, flexibility and strength are the areas that you will need to focus on. Balance will keep you upright on your board or skis, being flexible will help you bend and twist to guide your body down the slopes nicely, and strength will enable you to maximise your time on the slopes.

Choose a suitable location

It is imperative that you keep your skill and experience level in mind when choosing the best place for your skiing vacation. While skiing is an incredibly fun pursuit, it can also be dangerous, particularly to those who are outside of their skill level. If you're going on a holiday for a week, don't try and ride the entire mountain on your first day. Give your body and mind time to adjust to your new surroundings, and by the end of the week you'll have taken your skill levels to new highs.

Know your gear

You need to have the right gear for you to ski properly. You want well maintained skis that are regularly waxed and sharpened. You also need a comfortable, supportive pair of boots. Boots are the most important thing, as they are what gives you the support and stability you need. Check out our ski boot guide here! You will also need to have waterproof/breathable clothing that is designed to handle both moisture and cold temperatures.
